Renewable Diesel Rail Expansion

Wyoming

PROJECT
OVERVIEW

A refinery in Wyoming was modified to process bio feedstock into renewable diesel (similar properties to diesel #2). Norwest’s scope of work was to retrofit the facility’s existing rail systems to offload tallow/soy and load renewable diesel. Fourteen (14) existing asphalt loading spots were retrofit to bio feedstock offloading. Eight (8) existing propane loading spots at an offsite location were retrofit to renewable diesel service. Norwest provided multi-discipline engineering from FEED through construction, which included providing support documentation for air permit, participation in PHA and MOC processes, as well as onsite/offsite construction, commissioning, and startup support.

Project Deliverables

  • Retrofit 14 asphalt loading spots to tallow/soy offloading (7,500 BPD).
  • Retrofit 8 propane loading spots to renewable diesel loading (5,000-8,000 BPD).
  • Retrofit existing rail racks for new fall protection platforms.
  • Complex steam heating/electrical tracing system for railcar heating and storage.

Unique Challenges

  • Careful considerations for heating systems were required to battle Wyoming winters. For bio products such as tallow, heating it to too hot a temperature for too long a duration can turn it rancid.
  • Creating new operations inside an existing facility adds complexity to any project. We spent time with local operators to become familiar with existing procedures and spent added time onsite to support the seamless integration of the new design.
  • An additional challenge inside the existing facility was locating where to install new rail operations. The FEED phase was systematically executed to balance various design options with cost, schedule, and existing operations.
